Lightup Prison Project

Lightup has been working with prisons and correctional facilities in Nigeria to engage the young people whom it has been empowering with tailoring skills to get involved with the production of the much-needed PPE. This initiative not only provided essential protective equipment but also reassured the young offenders that they can still be agents of change.

Lightup has continued to work with approximately 350-400 young people in secure settings each year, supporting young offenders with both tailoring and basic computing skills.

Lightup commenced prison work since 2014 and the team usually visits the Youth Borstal Correctional facility in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Nigeria. Each year, the Lightup team works with 350-400 young people providing

1

Motivational sessions and Counselling support.

2

Reunion between youths and their parents

3

Provision of skill training in Tailoring

4

Provision of training in basic computer use and computer repairs.

The young people who had tailoring skills produced PPE during the Covid-19 pandemic. Most
young people no longer leave the prison unskilled.
